The Power of Stories from Real Records

This book series is based on the diary of Nosangchu, a military official from Gyeongbukdo Seonsan during the late Joseon Dynasty (Yeongjo and Jeongjo era). It follows his journey from a young boy who became the head of his household to managing his family and ultimately passing the civil service exam.

Nosangchu was an officer who served under King Jeongjo and kept a diary throughout his entire life. Among his records, 53 years’ worth of his diary has been preserved. His writings vividly depict people from all walks of life in late Joseon society, from the king himself to household servants, making them a crucial historical resource for studying the customs and daily lives of the late Joseon period.

Every character and event in this book is real, as they are taken directly from Nosangchu’s diary. While we learn history throughout our school years and are surrounded by historical dramas, much of our understanding of Joseon Dynasty life comes from political records of the royal court or fictionalized narratives.

This book, however, is based on the authentic records of a devoted Confucian scholar. It provides a rare and insightful look into the everyday lives of ordinary Joseon people, illustrating how the historical knowledge we learn in textbooks was actually reflected in real life.
